Why won't my Mac update?

Published: 2nd of March, 2023

Have you been trying to update your Mac but keep encountering errors and messages that say the update can't be completed? If so, don't worry! Many people have had this problem since the new macOS Ventura update was released. But don't fret, we have some tips to help you out!

macOS Updates are accessible from Settings > Software Update

Here are some of the reasons why your Mac might not be updating:

  • Your Mac may not be compatible with the new macOS update.
Every time there's a new update, Apple provides a list of compatible devices, and if your Mac is not on that list, you won't be able to update it.

  • You may not have enough storage space on your Mac to download the new update.
It's important to have enough space available to ensure that the update is successful.

  • Your internet connection may be weak,
and without a stable connection, you won't be able to download the software update from the Mac App Store or connect to update servers.

  • Sometimes, Apple servers can have issues,
which may prevent you from downloading and installing macOS updates.

If you're experiencing freezing, crashing, or stalling during the macOS download process and software update, don't worry; we've got tips to help you.

💡 Tip: Before installing any significant updates, be sure to back up your Mac, just in case. You can use Time Machine and disk utility, iCloud, or third-party apps to back up your device.

Here's what you can do to fix issues with getting Mac updates:

  1. First, check if your Mac is compatible with the new update by visiting the Apple website and checking the list of compatible devices.
  2. Check if you have enough space on your Mac to download the update. To do this, go to Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Storage Settings or Settings > Storage.

  3. macOS Settings > Storage

  4. If you don't have enough storage space, you can manually free up some space or use a tool like iBoostUp (free download here) to help you clear up more space quickly. Open iBoostUp and select Quick Clean > Start Scan. Choose the items you want to delete, and click Remove.
  5. If the download is taking too long, check Apple's System Status page to see if there are any known issues.
  6. If Apple's system status is ok and your Internet is working fine but you still have trouble downloading the macOS update, you can try to do so manually — our blogpost with instructions is here.

Too Easy

With these tips, you should be able to update your Mac smoothly!
