Surprising Reasons Your iPhone Might Be Running Slow

Published: 13th of March, 2023

The iPhone is much like your Mac in that they both run a variant of the same software based on the XNU kernel. Due to this, both your Mac and your iPhone can slow down for similar reasons.

Read on to find out what the most common reasons are for your iPhone running slowly, and how to solve them for free without having to download or install anything.

Your iPhone is running low on storage space

Low storage on your iPhone or iPad can slow it down. To check how much space you have left, go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage. You can turn on storage-saving recommendations and delete unnecessary apps or content to free up space. You can also choose to "offload" an app from the [Device] Storage screen, which frees up storage used by the app but keeps its documents and data. This can help free up space without losing important app information.

You might be in low power mode

Low Power Mode is a setting that helps your iPhone or iPad save battery by using less power. It does this by turning off some features and making some things slower. If your battery icon looks yellow, that means Low Power Mode is on. But if you need your device to work normally and don't want it to use less power, you should turn off Low Power Mode. You can find this setting in your device's Battery section of the Settings.

Maybe your Apps or OS are outdated

To update your iOS, open the "Settings" app, then tap "General" followed by "Software Update." If an update is available, you can then tap "Download and Install."

To update your apps, open the "App Store" app and tap your profile icon. Scroll down to "Updates" to see if any updates are available. If they are, tap "Update" next to each app or "Update All" to update them all at once.

Apps are misbehaving

If an app freezes or stops working, force close it and reopen it. For iPhone X or later/iPad: Swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe left or right to find the app. Swipe up on the app preview to close it. For iPhone 8 or earlier: Double-click the Home button and swipe left or right to find the app. Swipe up on the app preview to close it.

Your iPhone battery is tired, low or malfunctioning

If your battery is weak or running very low, iOS will run slower to preserve power. Recharge your battery if needed. Rechargeable batteries in iPhones also lose capacity and performance over time, and will eventually need to be replaced. To check your iPhone's battery health and see if it needs to be replaced, go to Settings > Battery and tap "Battery Health."

Connectivity issues

Some apps need an internet connection for their content and features. If you're in a crowded area or moving in a vehicle, it can cause network congestion and make apps slow to open or load. Even if you have a strong signal, you may need to try again in a different location or use Wi-Fi. If you consistently have problems with cellular data, contact your carrier.

Hope this helped, see you next time!
