Knowing your Mac's serial number is super important but why, and how do you find it?

Why you need to know it

  • Warranty and repairs You need your serial number to check your warranty status or to get support from Apple.
  • Support and service history Apple and other support services use it to track the service history of your Mac.
  • Lost or stolen device If your Mac goes missing your serial number really helps when reporting it or trying to locate it.

In today's article I'm going to show you five ways to find your Mac's serial number. Let's go!

The first way 'About This Mac'

This is probably the easiest way to find your Mac's serial number:

  1. Click the Apple menubar item (it is the  on the very top left).
  2. Select About This Mac.
  3. A window will pop up showing your Mac's model, it's OS version and other details. Your serial number is shown near the bottom of the window.

The second way 'System Information'

If you want more detailed information about your Mac, this method will be perfect:

  1. Hold down the Option key and click the Apple menu.
  2. Choose System Information.
  3. In the sidebar, select Hardware. Here you'll find your serial number displayed along with other hardware details.

The 3rd way 'Physical Device'

Sometimes, the serial number is also printed directly on the device. Here's where to look:

  • MacBook: Check the underside of your MacBook near the regulatory markings.
  • iMac: Look at the bottom of the stand.
  • Mac Mini: Flip it over and check the bottom surface.
  • Mac Pro: The serial number is usually on the rear panel.

The fourth way 'Original Packaging'

You're in luck if you still have your Mac's original box or purchase receipt. The serial number is often printed on the side of it's original packaging or purchase reciept.

The last way 'Apple ID'

If you've lost your device and need the serial number:

  1. Go to Apple ID account page and sign in.
  2. Click Devices to see a list of devices associated with your Apple ID.
  3. Select your Mac to see its serial number along with other details.

Knowing where to find your serial number will save you time if your Mac ever needs support or repairs. Or you could grab a copy of it now — so you'll be ready next time you need it!
