Hey there Mac users, Maria here again. Wondered how to make a 7z file on your trusty MacBook? The 7z archive format is great for compressing really big files and folders and it's really easy to make one on your Mac once you know how. So, today I'll show you how to to create a 7z file without having to open the command-line — let's jump straight in!
The 7z format is known for having a high compression ratio — this simply means it's pretty good at making your files smaller.
If you follow these simple steps you'll have your files archived and compressed to a 7z file in no time!
First, launch iZip v4.9 or newer. You can download it for free directly from the iZip website.
On the toolbar, click the New Archive button to start creating your 7z file.
Click New Archive in the iZip main window's toolbar
Now, you can simply drag and drop the files and/or folders you want to compress. You can also use the [+] button down the bottom right to add them.
You can drag and drop, or use the [+] button to add files or folders
Next, click on Options and check the option called Create 7ZIP archive. When sharing 7z files, whoever you share with will need to have the free iZip for macOS or Windows installed. On Windows they could also use the 7-Zip app.
Finally, click Create to specify where you want to save your new 7z file.
You'll need to wait a while during the compression phase, then you're all done!
Optional: Encrypt Your 7z File with AES-256 If you're worried about security, iZip lets you add AES-256 encryption to your 7z archives. Enabling this option will make sure no one can view your files or even the file names without the password.
So that was pretty easy wasn't it?! I've just shown you how to create a 7z archive on macOS using iZip. If you're looking to save space or securely share your files, 7z is a great option for both. Feel free to drop by the iZip website for a free download, more information or updates.
Until next time,
❤️ Maria
